NIACC STEM Camps
Youth Exploring Science (YES!) Camp at NIACC
Join us for a science summer camp at NIACC where students entering 8th, 9th, 10th grades will explore a variety of science disciplines and career fields through hands-on activities. Campers will stay in the dorms at NIACC and work closely with faculty and college students to get a feel for the college experience. Scheduled day sessions include experiments and activities in Forensics, Biotechnology, Chemistry, Robotics, and Coding. Campers will attend a career panel to learn more about careers in STEM disciplines. Extra-curricular and evening activities will include competitions, games, and science-based art projects. We will have a screening of the documentary Underwater Dreams and campers are invited back to campus in November to hear author Joshua Davis speak about his book, Spare Parts (the story of a determined robotics team). Campers will leave camp with an improved understanding of STEM disciplines and career options, exposure to the college experience, and many fun memories!
Youth Exploring Science (YES!) Camp
Biotechnology: Learn how the tools of biotechnology and genetic engineering are used. Campers will transform genes into bacteria and learn how DNA technologies are used in food forensics.
Forensic Science & Chemistry: Learn how to collect and analyze crime scene evidence. Techniques will include chromatography, science of blood detection, and hair analyses. Campers will practice their techniques by analyzing a mock crime scene.
Chemistry & Art: Campers will study the chemistry of pigments and how pigment analysis is used to detect art forgery.
Game Coding: Learn programming by creating a video game!
Robotics: Explore the world of robotics. Campers will experience the programming and engineering that are used in designing and building robots. During the two sessions campers will continue to develop their expertise by participating in challenges.
